RAMS WIN AT
LANGSTON
January 25, 2010
LANGSTON, OK: The 10th ranked Texas Wesleyan University
men’s basketball team (15-4, 9-0 RRAC) overcame a
brilliant night at the free-throw line by Langston
University (5-10, 3-6) to take a 95-89 win on Monday.
The Texas Wesleyan vs. Langston series continued to
excite. In the last five years, the Rams lead the series
5-1; however, four of those victories came on the last
possession of the game. With Monday’s win, Texas
Wesleyan leads the all-time series 10-8.
The Lions came out firing on Monday. Catrell Curry
knocked down a pair of threes as Langston grabbed a
quick 17-5 advantage. The Rams chipped away at that
lead, and a fast break dunk from Ryan Glanzer followed
by a tip-in from Jeremy Mayfield gave Texas Wesleyan its
first lead at 27-26.
The Lions continued to fire away, shooting 54% from the
floor in the period, and led as late as 39-37 with 2:48
on the clock. A highlight reel ally-oop from Jamel White
to Hector Mukweyi tied the game at 39, and Texas
Wesleyan scored the final seven points of the half to
lead 44-39 at the break.
After hitting 9-of-10 free-throws in the first half, the
Lions went a perfect 27-for-27 in the second half to
keep the game close. A three-point play from Terrell
Henry midway through the second half gave Texas Wesleyan
its largest lead of the game at 68-57.
Langston cut that lead down to 70-68 with 8:04 on the
clock, but Jamel White drew a foul on a three point shot
on Texas Wesleyan’s next possession. White knocked down
all three free-throws and, after a Langston basket, hit
a three-pointer to push the Rams’ advantage back to
76-70. Terrific shooting down the stretch allowed Texas
Wesleyan to keep the Lions at arm’s length on their way
to the 95-89 win.
The Rams got 50 points off of their bench: 32 from
White, and 18 from Henry. White added seven assists and
six rebounds to his night. Hector Mukeyi scored 19
points, and Brian Wanamaker finished with 10 for the
Rams. Curry led five Lions in double-figure scoring with
25 points.
Texas Wesleyan outshot Langston 55%-45% and led the
battle-of-the-boards 34-27.
“Langston is a very talented team and this is one of the
toughest places to play in the conference,” commented
head coach Terry Waldrop. “We get everybody’s best game,
and the fact that we were able to overcome 36-of-37 at
the line on the road tonight says a lot about our team.”
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, when they
host Huston-Tillotson University. That game is scheduled
for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Sid Richardson Center.
RAMS HAMMER BULLDOGS
January 23, 2010
FORT WORTH, TX: The 10th ranked Texas Wesleyan
University men’s basketball team (14-4, 7-0 RRAC) took a
convincing 92-74 win over Jarvis Christian College
(2-14, 1-6) in the Sid Richardson Center on Saturday.
A raucous crowd of approximately 600 was on hand for the
contest. “It was great to have the support of so many
alumni as well as the faculty, staff, and students,”
commented head coach Terry Waldrop. “Having such great
support really makes what we are doing special.”
After trailing 14-13 out of the gate, the Rams erupted
with a 19-3 run highlighted by a thunder jam from Jeremy
Mayfield that put them firmly in the driver’s seat.
Texas Wesleyan went on to lead 48-30 at the intermission
thanks largely to Mayfield who posted a double-double
with 12 points and 10 rebounds in the period.
After Jarvis hit the first bucket of the second half,
the Rams ripped off seven unanswered points to
effectively put the game away at 55-32. Texas Wesleyan’s
lead swelled to as many as 29, 75-46, on their way to
the 92-74 win.
Texas Wesleyan outshot Jarvis Christian 45%-37% from the
floor and held a 48-35 rebounding margin. The Rams
outscored the Bulldogs 42-24 in the paint and 22-11 off
of turnovers.
Six Rams reached double-figures in scoring led by Jeremy
Smith’s 19 points. Mayfield finished with 14 points and
12 boards, while fellow big-man Hector Mukweyi posted 14
points and nine rebounds. Brian Wanamaker added 11
points, and Terrell Henry and Jamel White each chipped
in ten.
Jarvis’ Kevin Hayden scored a game-high 23 points, while
Phillip Gavin finished with 17 points and nine rebounds.
“I thought we had a workmanlike effort tonight,” Waldrop
said. “This was not our best game, but we attacked and
got to the free throw line. We will keep improving, and
are looking forward to a big road game on Monday.”
The Rams will return to action on Monday, when they
travel to Langston, OK, to take on Langston University
in Red River Athletic Conference action. That game is
scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start.
STREAK REACHES 30
January 18, 2010
FORT WORTH, TX: The 10th ranked Texas Wesleyan
University men’s basketball team (13-4, 6-0 RRAC) ran
its home court winning streak to 30 consecutive games
with a 92-80 win over the University of the Southwest
(5-7, 3-2) on Monday.
The Rams, who last lost on their home floor on January
28, 2008, came out firing against the Mustangs. A three
from Terrell Henry gave the Rams their largest lead of
the game at 26-7 with 10:44 on the clock.
USW head coach Jerry Voight called a timeout and his
Mustangs responded with a 16-2 run to get right back in
the game at 28-23. The Rams quickly regained command as
a Jeremy Smith three-pointer capped an 11-1 run, and
Texas Wesleyan went on to lead 46-37 at halftime.
In the second half the Mustangs cut the lead to two
points at 50-48, but Jamel White hit one-of-two at the
line and then knocked down a triple to stretch the lead
to six points. USW got within three points several times
in the game’s final ten minutes, but every time Texas
Wesleyan answered with a bucket on their next
possession.
After a layup from Aaron King brought the score to
84-78, the Rams pulled away in the final two minutes to
post the 92-80 victory.
On the game, Texas Wesleyan shot an even 50% (31-62)
from the floor and 40% (6-15) from long range while the
Mustangs hit at a 45% clip. The Rams dominated the glass
47-34 and outscored the Mustangs’ bench 37-12.
“We have had an emotional couple of days,” commented
head coach Terry Waldrop. “It was good to get back on
the floor and compete against a team that is going to
win a lot of games in this league. We played through
some foul trouble that we have not had all year, but our
bench really stepped up and gave us some big minutes.”
Brian Wanamaker was a perfect 10-for-10 at the free
throw line (just one shy of a school record) and
finished with 24 points, 10 rebounds, and seven assists.
Hector Mukwey had a double-double with 11 points and 10
rebounds in the first half and finished with 16 points
and 12 boards. Jamel White added 23 points to the win.
Louis Benson led the Mustangs with 24 points, while King
finished with 21 and Demetrius Evans finished with 12
points.
The Rams will return to action on Saturday, when they
host Jarvis Christian College. Texas Wesleyan will host
their Ramin’ Slammin’ Tailgate Party prior to the
women’s game which is scheduled for a 5:30 p.m. start
with the men’s game to follow at 7:30 p.m.
RAMS BLITZ LIONS
January 14, 2010
FORT WORTH, TX: The 17th ranked Texas Wesleyan
University men’s basketball team (12-4, 5-0 RRAC) had a
lightning quick start en route to an 83-72 win over
Southwestern Assemblies of God University (4-9, 1-3) on
Thursday.
The Rams got off to a terrific start, not committing a
turnover in the game’s first 13 minutes. Hector Mukweyi
set the tone, slamming home the game’s first points off
a feed from Brian Wanamaker. That was the first of a
series of four alley-oop jams for Mukweyi in the first
half. The Rams ran out to a 30-9 lead with just over six
minutes to play in the first half.
The Lions closed the gap to ten points at 34-24, but
Jamel White answered with a pair of three-pointers
before James Ford’s jump shot sent the game to halftime
at 40-26.
The Rams held the Lions at arm’s length through much of
the second half. SAGU made one push to get back in the
game. A three from Ronald Horne cut Texas Wesleyan’s
advantage to 67-60 with just under six minutes to play,
but once again White was there with the answer, knocking
down a trey on Texas Wesleyan’s next possession. After
Mukweyi made one-of-two at the line, White hit another
triple to bring the score to 74-60, and Texas Wesleyan
cruised to the 83-72 win.
For the game, the Rams shot 48.7% from the field and 45%
(9-of-20) from long range, while holding SAGU to 37.7%
from the floor and 30% (9-of-30) from long range. The
Rams also out rebounded the Lions 42-37 and outscored
the Lions 40-24 in the paint.
“We have got to learn to play the entire game like the
score is tied,” said head coach Terry Waldrop. “I
thought we let off the gas a little and SAGU made a push
to get back in it, but we were able to regain our
swagger and make it comfortable at the end.”
White led all scorers with 24 points to go with six
rebounds. Mukweyi turned in a double-double with 19
points and 11 rebounds. Jeremy Smith (11 points, 8
assists), Terrell Henry (11 points), and Brian Wanamaker
(10 points) also scored in double-figures for the Rams.
James Ford led four Lions in double-figure scoring with
18 points, while Ronald Horne finished with 17 for SAGU.
The Rams will return to action on Monday, when they host
the University of the Southwest in Red River Athletic
Conference Action. That game is scheduled for a 7:30
p.m. start.
RAMS MOVE TO 4-0 IN RRAC
January 11, 2010
FORT WORTH, TX: The 17th ranked Texas Wesleyan
University men’s basketball team (11-4, 4-0 RRAC) took a
78-71 win over Bacone College (4-7, 0-3) in the Sid
Richardson Center on Monday.
The first half saw six ties and four lead changes. The
Rams began to pull away in the final minute of the
period, taking their largest lead at 37-30, but Bacone’s
Ronnie Battle hit a three to cut the margin to four
points at the break.
After committing 12 turnovers in the first half, the
Rams limited their mistakes in the second half. After
Battle made it a two point game, 53-51, with a jumper
midway through the period, a Terrell Henry three-pointer
sparked seven unanswered points for Texas Wesleyan. The
lead swelled to 12 points at 67-55 with just under six
minutes to play, and the Rams never allowed the Warriors
to get back within striking distance.
For the game, the Rams outshot the Warriors 49%-34%, and
led 16-7 in fast break points.
“Bacone played very hard tonight,” commented head coach
Terry Waldrop. “They came in here with something to
prove and they have a very good ball team. We have got
to get better and limit the mistakes. We have not begun
to tap the potential that this group has.”
Jamel White led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-12
shooting from the field and 5-8 from long range. Hector
Mukweyi finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds. Brian
Wanamaker contributed 18 points and Jeremy Smith
finished with 10 for the Rams. Battle led the Warriors
with 22 points on 9-of-25 shooting and 11 rebounds.
The Rams will return to action on Thursday, when they
host Southwestern Assemblies of God University. That
game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Sid
Richardson Center.
RAMS RUN PAST TIGERS
January 9, 2010
DALLAS, TX: The Texas Wesleyan University men’s
basketball team (10-4, 3-0 RRAC) took a 76-48 win at
Paul Quinn College (2-6, 0-2) on Saturday.
The Rams came out hot, shooting 62.5% in the first half
while holding Paul Quinn to just 32%. Texas Wesleyan
started the game on a 14-4 run and led by as many as 18
(39-2) on their way to a 39-23 lead at the break.
After Paul Quinn’s Brandon Thompson scored the first
bucket of the second half, the Rams ripped off 15
unanswered points to put the game away. The lead swelled
to as many as 37 (72-35) and the Rams rolled on to the
76-48 victory.
For the game, the Rams shot 54.7% from the field while
holding Paul Quinn to 31.5%. A 39-29 rebounding
advantage allowed the Rams to run the court. Texas
Wesleyan outscored Paul Quinn 38-6 on the fast break.
Jeremy Smith led all scorers with 20 points. Hector
Mukweyi added 14 points and Terrell Henry finished with
11 points in the win. Paul Quinn was led by Trevor
Kendrick’s 13 points.
“It’s important that we were able to get production from
our bench,” commented head coach Terry Waldrop. “We
spread the minutes around tonight, and everyone put in
productive minutes. That is critical as we play so many
games so close together in January and February. The
defense was solid, and we were able to set the tempo
tonight.”
The Rams will return to the Sid Richardson Center on
Monday, when they host Bacone College. That game is
scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start. |
