Members of the Texas Wesleyan University men’s
basketball team took time out to volunteer at the Boys
and Girls Club last week.
On Thursday, players along with Associate Head Coach
Brennen Shingleton and Assistant Coach Tim Bellmon
visited the afterschool program at the Boys and Girls
Club located just across Rosedale St. from Texas
Wesleyan’s historic campus in Fort Worth. The Rams
played Jeopardy and helped children with their homework.
“Nothing makes us more proud as coaches than when we
step away from the game and see the young men in our
program outside of a competitive light,” Shingleton
said. “These are the guys we recruit at Texas Wesleyan;
guys that really can impact other people, kids, and us
as coaches as well. We really enjoy doing these types of
things, have been fortunate enough to be involved in the
NAIA outreach program at the National Tournament in
Kansas City, and wish we had time to do more of it.”
Head Coach Terry Waldrop, along with Shingleton and
Bellmon have recruited quality individuals as well as
quality players. The Rams have made five trips to the
NAIA National Tournament in the last six years, winning
the title in 2006. The Rams hold the third longest
current streak, having been ranked in the NAIA’s Top-25
in 43 consecutive Coaches’ Polls. During their current
stretch of four consecutive Red River Athletic
Conference Regular Season Championship, they have
amassed a record of 65-11 in conference play.
“It really is a rewarding experience to see our guys
give back, let their true colors come out, and have a
great influence on these young kids,” Shingleton
continued. “Our program has always had a great
relationship with Jason at the Boys and Girls Club, and
it was amazing to see our players relate to the kids at
the club. We have invited them to our home games, and by
then end of the visit, they were all on a first name
basis with the team. It was fun and rewarding to watch
our guys pay it forward.”
The Rams will open the season with three games at home,
beginning with Sterling College on November 11. That
game is scheduled for a 7:30 p.m. start in the Sid
Richardson Center.
